Your Midwife Care Guide

Attending antenatal and postnatal care when you are pregnant and have a new baby is essential to ensure the wellbeing of you and your baby.

There are points in your pregnancy where we recommend seeing you face to face, at other times we are recommending contact via telephone

Your routine antenatal care

Some women will have an individualised plan that differs from that detailed below. Either your midwife or obstetrician will discuss your care plan with you. If your pregnancy requires Obstetric led care your Community Midwife appointments will only be at booking 25, 34, & 40 weeks.

First appointment – Face to face appointment in clinic

Your Midwife will collect information from you and arrange a booking appointment which will either be face to face or over the telephone depending on their assessment during this appointment.

Midwife booking appointment – Most will be conducted over the telephone

You will be contacted by a member of the Midwifery team with an appointment.

12 – 14 week ultrasound scan

An appointment will be arranged and sent to you after your initial booking appointment.

Midwife 16 week antenatal appointment – Face to face

You will be contacted by your midwife by telephone at a time arranged to discuss your pregnancy and any concerns. Your midwife will ensure that you have received all your blood results.

20 week ultrasound scan

An appointment will be arranged for you after your ultrasound scan with your Midwife at 25 weeks
You will be informed by your midwife the date and time for your next appointment.

Midwife 28 week antenatal appointment – Face to face appointment in clinic

You will have a face to face appointment with your midwife to discuss your pregnancy and any concerns and have recommended blood tests.

Midwife 31 week antenatal appointment – Face to face appointment in clinic

You will be informed by your midwife the date and time of your next appointment.

Midwife 34 week antenatal appointment – Face to face appointment in clinic

You will be informed by your midwife the date and time of your next appointment.

Midwife 36 week antenatal appointment – Face to face appointment in clinic

You will be informed by your midwife the date and time of your next appointment.

Midwife 38 week antenatal appointment – Face to face appointment in clinic

You will have a face to face appointment with your midwife to discuss your pregnancy and any concerns. An appointment will be made for induction of labour if you become overdue.

Midwife 40 week antenatal appointment – Face to face appointment in clinic

You will also be offered a cervical stretch and sweep to take place at 40+4,40+6 and 40+8. This may help you to go into labour without the need for induction of labour or make the induction process more effective. Your midwife will explain this to you.

Induction of labour at 10 days overdue

If you have not had your baby, the hospital will contact you in the morning to discuss the time to arrive at the hospital.
If you have had a plan made by a consultant outside of the pathway above, this will be communicated with you separately.
